How Much Does Upwork Cost? Upwork Fees, Client Costs and Pricing in 2026

Upwork publishes every fee, so the answer is exact. For a client, the total cost is a marketplace fee of 3% to 5% of what you pay, plus a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract. Separately, the freelancer pays a variable service fee of 0% to 15% out of their own earnings, and buys Connects at $0.15 each to bid. A single flat project fee is the alternative to that stack of small charges. All figures verified July 2026.

One fee, not six

SuperGig replaces the marketplace fee, the contract fee, the service fee and Connects with a single flat 10%. Freelancers keep 100% of their rate. See the full freelance marketplace fees.

The fee stack

What Upwork actually charges

Upwork is the opposite of a black box: it publishes all of its fees. The catch is that there are several of them, they land on different people, and the total depends on how you pay. For a client, cost is simple. You pay the freelancer's agreed amount, plus a marketplace fee of 5% on the Basic plan, or 3% if you are an eligible US client paying by bank or checking account (ACH). Business Plus clients pay 10%, or 8% with the same ACH discount. Each new contract also carries a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99.

The freelancer side is where the real money moves. Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee of 0% to 15%, disclosed at the moment they submit each proposal and fixed for the life of that contract. This replaced the old flat 10% and the earlier tiered model, so the rate on the card and the amount a freelancer actually banks can differ by up to 15%. Freelancers also buy Connects at $0.15 each to apply for work, which is a cost they carry before they have earned a cent.

Every number on this page is Upwork's own published fee, verified July 2026. There is no hedging needed, only addition. For the wider market context on rates before fees, our guide to how much it costs to hire a freelancer covers rate bands across disciplines.

The cost breakdown

What Upwork charges, component by component

Six line items make up the total cost of working through Upwork. The third column is the one that matters most for budgeting: some fees land on the client, some on the freelancer, and a couple are optional depending on the plan you choose.

Cost component What Upwork charges Who pays
Client marketplace fee 5% on the Basic plan, or 3% for eligible US clients paying by bank or checking (ACH). Business Plus pays 10%, or 8% with ACH. Client
Contract initiation fee A one-time charge of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract, applied when the contract starts. Client
Freelancer service fee A variable 0% to 15%, disclosed to the freelancer at proposal time and fixed for the life of that contract. Replaced the old flat and tiered fees. Freelancer
Connects $0.15 each, spent to submit proposals. Freelancer Basic includes 10 free per month; Freelancer Plus includes 100. Freelancer
Membership (Freelancer Plus) Freelancer Basic is free. Freelancer Plus is $19.99 per month and adds 100 Connects plus more visibility. Client Basic is free; Business Plus is paid. Optional, either side
Withdrawal Standard ACH or direct deposit is free. Instant transfer carries a small fee. Freelancer

Side by side

Upwork cost vs SuperGig cost, line for line

Cost item Upwork SuperGig
Platform fee A stack: 3-5% client marketplace fee, a $0.99-$14.99 contract fee, and a separate 0-15% service fee on the freelancer. A single flat 10% project fee. Nothing else.
Cost to apply or bid Connects at $0.15 each, several per proposal, paid by the freelancer before any work. None. No Connects, no pay-to-bid. You receive a curated shortlist.
Deposit to start No deposit, but the contract initiation fee applies at the start of each new contract. No deposit. You fund milestone 1 in escrow when you are ready to start work.
What the freelancer keeps Their rate minus a 0-15% service fee, so the card rate and the net can differ. 100% of their quoted rate. The rate you see is the rate they get.
Payment protection Fixed-price milestones and hourly work-diary protection built into the platform. Milestone escrow, released only on work you approve.
Time to a shortlist You post a job and sort through open bids yourself. Volume can be high; quality varies. 48 hours from a written brief. No sorting through bids.
Vetting bar Open marketplace. Anyone can create a profile and bid; you do the screening. 4-stage vetting that passes fewer than 1 in 20 applicants.

Both fee models are published and easy to compute in advance. The difference is structure: many small charges spread across both sides, versus one flat fee with the freelancer kept whole. See exactly how hiring works on SuperGig, or read the full Upwork alternative breakdown.

A worked example

A $5,000 fixed-scope project, costed on both

Same project, same $5,000 paid to the freelancer, costed with each platform's published fees. On the Upwork side we assume a US client paying by ACH, so the marketplace fee is at the lower 3%. Watch two things: what the client pays, and what the freelancer actually banks.

Through Upwork

Published fees
  • Amount paid to the freelancer$5,000
  • Client marketplace fee, 3% with ACH$150
  • Contract initiation fee (one-time, up to)$14.99
  • Freelancer service fee, 0% to 15%$0 to $750
  • Connects the freelancer spent to bida few $

Client total: about $5,165 ($5,000 plus $150 plus up to $14.99). The headline client fee is genuinely low. The cost sits on the other side: after a service fee of up to 15%, the freelancer nets as little as $4,250 on the same job.

Through SuperGig

Flat fee
  • Amount paid to the freelancer$5,000
  • Flat 10% project fee$500
  • Contract or initiation fee$0
  • Connects or bid cost$0
  • Freelancer receives$5,000

Client total: $5,500, computed before you speak to anyone. The freelancer keeps 100% of the $5,000. The 10% is our entire revenue on the project, and there is no second fee hiding on the talent's side.

Being fair to Upwork: its headline client fee is low, and for this project the client pays less than on SuperGig. The honest difference is what happens to the freelancer and how much work you do to find them. On Upwork the service fee quietly erodes talent pay and you screen an open pool of bids yourself. On SuperGig the freelancer is kept whole, the fee is one number, and the shortlist is vetted. Fair is fair

Who Upwork is right for, and who it is not

Upwork is the largest open marketplace in the world and the low client fee is real. Price is only a problem when the cheap headline hides work you end up doing yourself. Here is the honest split.

Upwork is a good fit when

  • You want the biggest pool. Upwork has an enormous global talent base across nearly every skill, so obscure or niche requirements are more likely to be covered.
  • The client fee needs to be low. A 3% to 5% marketplace fee is among the cheapest headline costs in the market, which suits tight budgets.
  • The task is small and one-off. For a quick fixed task where you already know what good looks like, an open marketplace is efficient.
  • You like to browse and self-serve. If you enjoy reading profiles, comparing bids and running your own screening, the model rewards that effort.

Upwork costs you more when

  • You need a vetting floor. Anyone can bid, so the screening burden is entirely yours and a bad match is a real risk on important work.
  • Proposal friction slows you down. Connects and pay-to-bid mean strong freelancers ration their applications, and you may not see them.
  • You care what the freelancer nets. A service fee of up to 15% erodes talent pay, which can push the best people to raise rates or leave.
  • You want one predictable fee. A marketplace fee, a contract fee and a variable service fee spread across both sides is harder to reason about than a single flat percentage.

If your answer sits mostly on the right, the useful next step is a vetted platform with one flat fee. See SuperGig as an Upwork alternative, compare how much Toptal costs at the premium end, or start from the full platform comparison hub.

FAQ

Upwork pricing: common questions

How much does Upwork cost for clients?

Clients pay a marketplace fee of 5% on the Basic plan, dropping to 3% for eligible US clients who pay by bank or checking account (ACH). On top of that, each new contract carries a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99. Business Plus clients pay 10% (8% with the ACH discount). Client Basic membership is free.

What percentage does Upwork take from freelancers?

Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee of 0% to 15%. The exact rate is shown to the freelancer when they submit each proposal and is fixed for the life of that contract. This replaced the old flat 10% and earlier tiered structure, so two contracts can carry different service fees depending on what was disclosed at proposal time.

What is the Upwork Connects fee?

Connects are the tokens freelancers spend to submit proposals, priced at $0.15 each. Freelancer Basic includes 10 free Connects per month; Freelancer Plus at $19.99 per month includes 100. A single proposal can cost several Connects, so applying to jobs is a running cost freelancers carry before they earn anything. Clients do not pay for Connects.

Does Upwork charge a monthly fee?

Not unless you upgrade. Freelancer Basic and Client Basic are both free. Freelancer Plus is $19.99 per month and adds 100 Connects plus extra visibility. Business Plus is a paid client tier. Standard ACH or direct deposit withdrawals are free, while instant transfer carries a small fee. So the base platform is free to join on both sides.

Is Upwork cheaper than Toptal or a vetted marketplace?

On headline client fee, usually yes: a 3% to 5% marketplace fee is lower than a vetted platform premium. But the price is unvetted bidding, Connects and proposal friction, and a service fee that quietly cuts freelancer pay. SuperGig charges a flat 10% project fee, no Connects and no deposit, and freelancers keep 100% of their rate behind 4-stage vetting.
