How Much Does Toptal Cost? Toptal Pricing, Hourly Rates and Fees in 2026

Toptal does not publish a public rate card. Its own pricing page advertises a $0 recruiting fee and a risk-free trial period, but lists no hourly rates, no deposit amount and no membership fee, verified by reading toptal.com/pricing in July 2026. Third-party reviews consistently report client-facing rates of roughly $60 to $150+ per hour, a refundable deposit of around $500 to start, and a monthly membership fee of around $79. Those numbers come from reviewers, not from Toptal, so the honest answer to "how much does Toptal cost" is that you find out on a call.

The transparency gap

What Toptal publishes, and what it does not

Search for Toptal pricing and you will find dozens of pages quoting confident numbers. Almost none of them come from Toptal. We read the company's own pricing page on 19 July 2026 and here is what it actually says: there is a $0 recruiting fee, and there is a risk-free trial period during which, in Toptal's words, if you do not find the talent to be extraordinary you will not be charged and you can keep any work completed during the trial. That is a genuinely good guarantee, and it is worth something.

What the page does not contain is any hourly rate, any deposit amount, any membership price and any statement of how much Toptal keeps from what you pay. Pricing is quoted to you individually after an intake conversation. That is a normal enterprise sales motion and Toptal is entitled to run it. It does mean that anyone who tells you precisely what Toptal costs is either quoting their own invoice or repeating a third-party estimate.

Every figure on this page that did not come from toptal.com is labelled as reported. We would rather be useful and honest than confident and wrong. If you want the wider market context first, our guide to how much it costs to hire a freelancer covers rate bands across disciplines.

The cost breakdown

What Toptal actually charges, component by component

Six line items make up the total cost of a Toptal engagement. The third column is the one most pricing articles skip: whether Toptal itself publishes the number, or whether it comes from reviewers and former clients.

Cost component What Toptal charges Published by Toptal?
Hourly rate No public rate card. Reported by third-party reviews at roughly $60 to $150+/hr, with specialized senior roles reported above $200/hr. No
Deposit No figure on the pricing page. Reported by third-party reviews as a refundable ~$500 to start, credited toward your first invoice. No
Monthly membership Not listed on the pricing page. Reported by third-party reviews at around $79 per month as a subscription or membership charge. No
Recruiting fee $0. Stated directly on Toptal's own pricing page. You do not pay a separate placement or sourcing charge. Yes
Markup transparency One blended hourly rate bundles the freelancer's pay and Toptal's margin. The split is not disclosed to the client. Reported markups run as high as roughly 50%. No
Minimum commitment No minimum published. Engagement shapes and any weekly-hour floors are agreed during intake. Full-time work is reported at roughly $2,400 to $6,000 per week. No

Verified 19 July 2026 by reading toptal.com/pricing. Five of six line items are not published by Toptal. Every number above marked as reported comes from third-party reviews rather than from Toptal, so confirm current terms with Toptal directly before budgeting. SuperGig is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Toptal; Toptal is a trademark of its owner.

Side by side

Toptal cost vs SuperGig cost, line for line

Cost item Toptal SuperGig
Platform fee Built into the blended hourly rate. Not shown as a separate line and not published. Flat 10% project fee, published, shown before you commit.
Deposit to start Reported at around $500, refundable and credited to your first invoice. Not on the pricing page. None. You fund milestone 1 in escrow when you are ready to start work.
Monthly membership Reported at around $79 per month. Not on the pricing page. None. No subscription, no seat charge, nothing recurring.
What the freelancer keeps Not disclosed. The client sees one blended rate covering both talent pay and margin. 100% of their quoted rate. The rate you see is the rate they get.
Rate visibility Quoted after an intake conversation. Nothing published in advance. Printed on every talent card before you talk to anyone.
Payment protection A risk-free trial period: if the talent is not extraordinary you are not charged and you keep the trial work. Milestone escrow, released only on work you approve.
Time to a shortlist Starts with scheduling an intake call, then matching. Often fast once you are inside the process. 48 hours from a written brief. No call required.
Vetting bar Deep multi-step screening with a large established bench behind it. 4-stage vetting that passes fewer than 1 in 20 applicants.

Toptal figures marked as reported are from third-party reviews and change over time. Our numbers are the same on every page of this site, and how hiring works is documented step by step. For a head-to-head on the two incumbents, see Upwork vs Toptal.

A worked example

A 3-month, 20-hour-a-week engagement, costed on both

This is an illustration built from reported figures, not a quote from either platform. Toptal has not published the rates used here and neither company has priced this scenario. We are using a mid-senior developer, 20 hours a week for 13 weeks, which is 260 hours total. Run the same arithmetic with whatever quote you are actually given.

Through Toptal

Reported figures
  • 260 hours at a reported $80/hr (low end)$20,800
  • 260 hours at a reported $150/hr (upper end)$39,000
  • Reported deposit to start (credited to invoice 1)~$500
  • Reported membership, 3 months at ~$79~$237
  • Recruiting fee (published by Toptal)$0

Illustrative total: roughly $21,000 to $39,200 depending where your quoted rate lands. How much of that reaches the developer is not disclosed. If the reported markup of up to roughly 50% is accurate, a meaningful slice of every hour is margin, but Toptal has never published the number so nobody outside the company can state it as fact.

Through SuperGig

Published fee
  • 260 hours at a card rate of $80/hr$20,800
  • Flat 10% project fee$2,080
  • Deposit$0
  • Monthly membership$0
  • Developer receives$20,800

Illustrative total: $22,880, and you can compute it before you speak to anyone because both inputs are public. The freelancer keeps 100% of the $80. The 10% is our entire revenue on the project.

The interesting comparison is not the headline total, because at the low end of the reported range the two land close together. It is what you can know in advance. On one path the rate, the deposit and the fee are all public arithmetic. On the other you get a quote after a call and you never learn the split. Fair is fair

Who Toptal is right for, and who it is not

Toptal built the premium end of this market and the reputation is earned. Price is only a problem when it buys you something you do not need. Here is the honest split.

Toptal is worth the price when

  • You need bench depth. Toptal has a large, established network across engineering, design, finance and product, so unusual skill combinations are more likely to be covered.
  • Procurement wants a known vendor. A long track record with enterprise clients makes the internal approval conversation shorter, and that has real value.
  • You want a no-cost escape hatch. The trial period genuinely lets you swap a bad match without paying, and you keep the work completed during it. That is a strong guarantee and few competitors match it.
  • The engagement is long and embedded. For a year-long staff augmentation seat, account management and a managed bench are worth paying for.

Toptal is the wrong spend when

  • The work is project-shaped. A defined deliverable with a budget and a deadline does not need account management, and the premium buys nothing extra.
  • You need a number today. If you are building a budget this week, an intake call before any pricing is a real cost in time.
  • Cash up front matters. A reported $500 deposit plus a reported monthly membership is friction on a small first project, even when the deposit is refundable.
  • You care where the money goes. If you want the freelancer to receive what you pay, a blended rate with an undisclosed split is the wrong structure.

If your answer sits mostly on the right, the useful next step is a platform that publishes its numbers. See SuperGig as a Toptal alternative, read the Toptal vs Fiverr breakdown for the budget end of the market, or start from the full platform comparison hub.

FAQ

Toptal pricing: common questions

How much does Toptal cost per hour?

Toptal does not publish hourly rates, so there is no official number to quote. Third-party reviews commonly report client-facing rates of roughly $60 to $150+ per hour, with specialized senior roles reported above $200 per hour, and full-time engagements reported at roughly $2,400 to $6,000 per week. Those are reported figures, not published ones. Your actual rate is quoted during intake.

Does Toptal charge a deposit?

Toptal does not list a deposit figure on its public pricing page, verified July 2026. Third-party reviews widely report a refundable deposit of around $500 to start an engagement, credited toward your first invoice rather than kept as a fee. Because the amount is not published, confirm it with Toptal directly before you budget for it. SuperGig charges no deposit at all.

Is Toptal worth the price?

Toptal is worth it when the cost of a bad hire is far higher than the premium you pay to avoid one. You get a large established bench, a long enterprise track record, and a trial period that lets you swap a poor match at no cost. It is worth less on smaller, fixed-deliverable work, where the deposit, the reported membership fee and the undisclosed markup buy nothing extra.

What is Toptal's markup?

Toptal does not disclose its markup. You are billed one blended hourly rate that bundles the freelancer's pay and Toptal's margin, and the split is not shown to the client. Third-party reviews have reported markups running as high as roughly 50%, but treat that as an estimate rather than a fact, since Toptal has never published the number.

Are there cheaper alternatives to Toptal?

Yes. Curated marketplaces vet to a similar bar without the deposit, the reported membership fee or the hidden markup. SuperGig charges a flat 10% project fee, no deposit and no monthly membership, and freelancers keep 100% of their quoted rate, so the rate on the card is the rate they receive. Open marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr are cheaper again, with no vetting floor.
