Short answer: Penji is a fast, well-run design queue that now starts at $995 a month, twice the $499 many reviews still quote. It pays off for a small business that sends ten or more simple graphics a month, every month.
Below that volume, or for work that needs a specialist, a freelance designer you pay by the hour costs less. The line sits at about 10.8 hours of $60 an hour work a month, once you include a $349 flat plan on our side.

$349/mo, or $174/mo billed yearly. Freelancers apply to your post and you pick who to hire.
Penji restructured its plans in 2026. The entry tier used to be a $499 Business plan with one active project, and it is still the number you will find in a lot of comparison articles. Penji's pricing page now opens at $995. Quarterly billing takes 15% off and yearly billing 20%.
| Plan | Monthly | Quarterly | Yearly | Active workstreams | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $995 | $845.75 | $796 | 2 | 1 business day |
| Agency Partner | $1,995 | $1,695.75 | $1,596 | 3 | Same day |
| Dedicated Team | From $4,500 | $3,825 | $3,600 | 4 | Real-time collaboration |
Essentials covers branding, logos, ad creative, social media, email, print, packaging, Canva templates, presentations, illustration and infographics, for one brand. Agency Partner adds short-form video, motion graphics, animation, web design and a white-label platform, which is why agencies reselling design land there. Dedicated Team adds senior creatives only, AI video production and front-end development. Every plan has a 30 day money-back guarantee, no contract and cancel anytime.
Speed is the consistent praise. Penji says most projects deliver in one business day, with first drafts in 24 to 48 hours and revisions inside 24 hours, and reviewers broadly agree it beats most queue services on turnaround. The request portal is simple, you can annotate drafts directly, and the no-contract, 30 day refund terms make it easy to try.
The complaints are about the model, not the company. Reviewers report designer swaps between requests, first drafts that need several rounds on complex briefs, and a drop in quality once the work moves beyond core graphic design. That pattern is built into any queue. Speed comes from routing each request to whoever is free, and that same routing is why the person on your fifth request may not know what you decided on the first.
So the fair verdict is narrow. Penji is very good at the work a queue is good at: repeatable formats with a clear template, such as a weekly set of social posts, resized ad variants, flyers and email headers. It is a weaker buy for a logo and identity, a pitch deck that tells a story, or product and UX design, where one person's accumulated judgement is the product.
Strong fit
Weak fit
Penji does not sell hours, so you cannot compute an hourly rate the way you can for Flocksy or Design Pickle. The honest unit is the finished design. Count what you actually sent last quarter, divide by three, and read your row.
| Finished designs a month | Essentials, monthly | Essentials, yearly | Agency Partner, monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $199.00 each | $159.20 | $399.00 |
| 10 | $99.50 | $79.60 | $199.50 |
| 20 | $49.75 | $39.80 | $99.75 |
| 30 | $33.17 | $26.53 | $66.50 |
At five designs a month, Essentials charges $199 for each social graphic. That is more than a good freelancer bills for the same file. At 20 it is $49.75 and hard to beat. The whole decision is which row you are really on, and most small businesses guess one row higher than their history shows.
Put both on the same footing: total spend a month. With us you pay $349 a month for a project post and the designer's hourly rate directly, with no project fee. The table shows how many hours of freelance work cost the same as each Penji plan. Need fewer hours than that and the freelancer is cheaper.
| Freelance rate | Same money as Essentials ($995) | Same money as Agency Partner ($1,995) |
|---|---|---|
| $45 an hour | 14.4 hrs | 36.6 hrs |
| $60 an hour | 10.8 hrs | 27.4 hrs |
| $85 an hour | 7.6 hrs | 19.4 hrs |
Ten hours is less than it sounds. A competent designer turns around a set of four social posts on an existing template in about an hour, so ten hours is 30 to 40 routine graphics, or a single landing page and a small ad set. If your month is mostly templated graphics at that volume or more, Penji is the cheaper buy. If it is a handful of jobs that each need thinking, the freelancer is, and you keep the same person every time.
A worked example. A specialty coffee roaster needs a seasonal bag label, two email headers, eight social posts and a menu board refresh each month. That is about 12 hours for one designer who knows the brand, $1,069 at $60 an hour with the flat plan, against $995 for Essentials. On price it is a draw. The label is the job that decides it: packaging goes to print and a queue that swaps designers is where label errors creep in. The finished menu graphics then go straight onto the in-store screens, which the roaster can schedule across locations with digital signage software instead of swapping USB sticks.
More volume, more formats
An hours-based subscription tracks time instead of slots. Flocksy starts at $1,199 a month on annual billing for 42 hours with video and motion included. See the full Flocksy pricing and cost per hour.
One specialist
For identity, UX or a deck that has to persuade, hire a vetted freelance designer and keep the same person across every job.
Enterprise scale
Managed creative teams start far higher. Our Superside pricing breakdown shows a $192,000 yearly floor.
For hourly rates across graphic, brand and web design, and how subscriptions compare at each monthly volume, see our guide to freelance graphic design cost. Design Pickle, the other long-running subscription, is covered in our Design Pickle pricing review.
Penji lists three plans in 2026. Essentials is $995 a month with two active workstreams, Agency Partner is $1,995 with three, and Dedicated Team starts at $4,500 with four. Quarterly billing takes 15% off and yearly billing 20%, so Essentials drops to $796 a month when paid for a year.
It is worth it if you send a steady stream of simple graphics every week, such as social posts, ads, flyers and email headers. At 20 finished designs a month, Essentials costs $49.75 each. If you need fewer than about 10 designs a month, or complex brand or product work, a freelance designer paid by the hour usually costs less.
No. Older reviews quote a $499 Business plan with one active project, but Penji's current pricing page starts at $995 a month for Essentials. If you see $499 in a comparison, the article predates the 2026 restructuring and the numbers built on it are out of date.
Yes. Penji offers a 30 day money-back guarantee, no contracts and cancel anytime on its pricing page. That makes the first month a low-risk test. Use it to send your real mix of work, including one complex brief, so you learn how the queue handles the jobs that matter most.
It is the number of requests Penji works on for you at the same time. Essentials runs two, so a third request waits until one of the first two is approved. You can queue as many requests as you like, but throughput is set by the workstreams and by how fast you give feedback.
It depends on the gap. For more volume across video and motion, an hours-based subscription such as Flocksy fits. For occasional or specialist work, a vetted freelance designer paid by the hour is cheaper. Below about 10.8 hours of $60 an hour design a month, a freelancer plus a $349 flat plan costs less than Essentials.
Post the jobs you would queue with a subscription and see which vetted designers apply. Agree the rate, pay the designer directly and keep the same person on every job. $349 a month for the post, no project fee.
Business is $349 per month, or $174 per month billed yearly (50% off), for a project post on the SuperGig project board, with no project fee.
