Short answer: QuickBooks Live Full Service bookkeeping is reported at $300 a month and up in 2026, after a one-time cleanup fee, and Expert Assisted at $59 a month. Both need a QuickBooks Online subscription on top, now $38 to $340 a month after the August 2026 price rise, so a typical small business pays about $385 a month all in.
For categorization, reconciliation and monthly statements on one entity, that is fair value: $300 buys what about 6.7 hours of a $45 freelance bookkeeper would. It stops being good value when your books need bill pay, invoicing, payroll or inventory, because Intuit excludes all four. That is where a freelance bookkeeper who owns the whole job usually costs less.

We checked Intuit's QuickBooks Live pricing page in September 2026. It shows no dollar figures at all. It lists the services (Expert Assisted, Expert Full Service Bookkeeping, Expert Cleanup and Expert Tax), a questionnaire and a sales phone number. Intuit's own help article confirms only the mechanics: price depends on your average monthly expenses in QuickBooks, the first month carries a flat cleanup and setup fee, and your tier is re-evaluated every three months. The figures below are what reviewers and accounting firms report from real quotes.
| Item | Reported price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Expert Assisted | $59/mo | Guidance while you do your own books; no one does the work for you |
| Expert Full Service | From $300/mo | A dedicated bookkeeper categorizes, reconciles and closes the month |
| Older tier, expenses up to $25,000/mo | $200/mo | The expense-based tier structure still widely quoted |
| Older tier, $25,001 to $150,000/mo | $400/mo | Same service, higher expense band |
| Older tier, over $150,000/mo | $700/mo | Same service, top expense band |
| First month cleanup and setup | Flat fee, often reported at $500 | Now quoted per business; more if the books are far behind |
| QuickBooks Online Simple Start | $38/mo | Required software, 1 user |
| QuickBooks Online Essentials | $85/mo | Required software, 3 users |
| QuickBooks Online Plus | $140/mo | Required software, 5 users, inventory tracking |
| QuickBooks Online Advanced | $340/mo | Required software, 25 users |
The QuickBooks Online prices matter more than they used to. For billing cycles from August 1, 2026, Essentials rose to $85, Plus to $140 and Advanced to $340, a jump of roughly 41% on Plus and 70% on Advanced. Several comparison articles still add the old software prices to the bookkeeping fee, so their totals now run low.
Nobody buys QuickBooks Live on its own, so the useful number is the bookkeeping fee plus the QuickBooks Online plan it runs on. Here are the reported entry prices for each combination, before payroll, payments processing or any cleanup.
| QuickBooks Online plan | Assisted ($59) total | Full Service ($300) total | Full Service, per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Start, $38 | $97/mo | $338/mo | $4,056 |
| Essentials, $85 | $144/mo | $385/mo | $4,620 |
| Plus, $140 | $199/mo | $440/mo | $5,280 |
| Advanced, $340 | $399/mo | $640/mo | $7,680 |
Year one is higher than the monthly figure suggests, because the first month is billed as cleanup and setup. Using the commonly reported $500 first month, a business on Full Service at $300 and Essentials pays about $4,820 in year one. On the older $400 tier with Plus it is about $6,580.
The expense-based tiers also have a cliff worth knowing about. Under the older structure, a business averaging $25,000 a month in expenses paid $200, or 0.8% of expenses. At $25,001 it paid $400, 1.6%, double the fee for one more dollar of spending. Because the tier is re-checked every three months, one heavy quarter (a big inventory buy, an equipment purchase, a seasonal ramp) can move you up a band for the next quarter even if nothing about your bookkeeping changed.
This is the part of the price most owners find out later. Intuit's help article lists what the bookkeeping service covers (categorization, reconciliation, monthly books, setup and chart of accounts, bank connections) and, just as plainly, what it does not.
No bill pay or invoicing
The service does not send invoices or pay bills. Someone on your side still runs both, every week.
No payables or receivables management
Nobody chases overdue customers or schedules vendor payments. For many businesses that is the most valuable bookkeeping work.
No inventory
Inventory management is out of scope, which rules it out for most ecommerce and product businesses.
No payroll
Payroll is a separate QuickBooks product with its own monthly and per-employee pricing.
No tax filing or 1099s
It does not file income or sales tax returns, create 1099s, or give tax advice. You still need a preparer.
No software training
QuickBooks Online training is excluded, so whoever runs bills and invoices needs to learn the product elsewhere.
None of this is hidden; it is the definition of the product. QuickBooks Live keeps the ledger accurate. A freelance bookkeeper is usually hired to keep the ledger accurate and also run the money moving through it. If you are unsure which of those you need, our breakdown of what a bookkeeper does, task by task shows how the hours split between the two.
The fair comparison converts the QuickBooks Live fee into freelance hours. Independent US bookkeepers charge $25 to $60 an hour in 2026; we use $45, the middle of that band. Each tier then buys a fixed number of hours, and the question is whether your books fit inside it.
| QuickBooks Live fee | Hours at $45 | Hours at $35 | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 (older lowest tier) | 4.4 | 5.7 | Under 100 transactions, one bank account |
| $300 (Full Service entry) | 6.7 | 8.6 | Simple service business, a few accounts |
| $400 (older middle tier) | 8.9 | 11.4 | 200 or so transactions, several cards |
| $700 (older top tier) | 15.6 | 20.0 | High volume, still without payroll or AP |
For categorization and reconciliation alone, those hours are generous. A clean single-entity service business with bank feeds rarely needs more than five or six hours a month of that work, so QuickBooks Live at $300 is a reasonable price for it, and cheaper than most bookkeeping firms, which bill $75 to $150 an hour.
The comparison flips when the excluded work is real. Say your business needs eight hours of bookkeeping plus four hours a month of bill pay and receivables follow-up. QuickBooks Live cannot do the four hours, so you pay $400 for the tier plus someone else for the rest: about $580 if you find a $45 freelancer for it, plus the time spent managing two providers who each see half the picture. One freelance bookkeeper covering all twelve hours costs $540 paid directly, or about $567 through a marketplace with a 5% client fee.
Our own route deserves the same honesty. Through our $349 plan the same twelve hours cost $889, more than either of the options above, because the plan is a fixed fee and twelve hours is small spend. If bookkeeping is the only role you are hiring, a marketplace or a direct referral is cheaper. The plan is the right buy when you are hiring a bookkeeper alongside other roles in the same month, or when the thing you want to avoid is a bad hire: the full rate bands and a firm vs freelancer vs flat plan table are on bookkeeping cost and bookkeeper hourly rates.
It is worth it for a single-entity business already on QuickBooks Online that needs categorization, reconciliation and monthly statements, and nothing more. The bookkeeper works inside your file, the close happens on a schedule, and $300 to $400 a month is below what a firm charges for the same scope.
Good fit
Consultants, agencies and local service businesses with bank feeds, a handful of cards, no inventory and payroll run through a separate provider. An owner who is happy to send invoices and pay bills personally and only wants the books reconciled and ready for the CPA.
Poor fit
Product and ecommerce businesses with inventory, anyone who wants receivables chased or bills scheduled, businesses with more than one entity, and companies whose spend swings enough to jump expense tiers from quarter to quarter.
If you are months behind, the cleanup quote matters more than the monthly fee. Catch-up work is priced by backlog, commonly $300 to $600 per month of missing books, and a large share of those hours goes into getting old statements into the ledger. Before you ask anyone to quote, it is worth trying to convert bank statements straight into QuickBooks yourself, because statements already imported are hours nobody has to bill. Whether you need a bookkeeper at all at your stage is covered in do I need a bookkeeper.
The options split by who does the work and how much of the job they own. Prices are 2026 ranges for US small businesses; firm and freelance figures come from published rate surveys and our own bookkeeping cost research.
| Option | 2026 price | Scope | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Live Assisted | $59/mo + software | Guidance only, you do the work | Owners who want to learn their own books |
| QuickBooks Live Full Service | From $300/mo + software | Categorize, reconcile, close | Simple single-entity books |
| Bookkeeping firm | $75 to $150/hr, $600 to $2,500/mo | Full scope, reviewed, backup cover | Multi-entity, inventory, audit-ready books |
| Freelance bookkeeper | $25 to $60/hr | Whatever you agree, including AP, AR and payroll | Growing businesses that want one person on the whole job |
| SuperGig | $349/mo + the bookkeeper's rate | Vetted shortlist, you pay the bookkeeper directly | Teams hiring a bookkeeper and other roles |
If you decide a person suits your books better than a service tier, compare vetted freelance bookkeepers with rates on the card. The hiring steps and the vetting questions that matter are in how to hire a bookkeeper.
No. Intuit states that QuickBooks Live Bookkeeping does not manage payroll, send invoices, pay bills, manage accounts payable or receivable, handle inventory, file income or sales tax returns, create 1099s or give tax advice. Payroll is a separate paid QuickBooks product, and tax filing needs an accountant or Intuit Expert Tax.
No. The bookkeeping service does not file income or sales tax returns or create 1099s. It prepares clean books that a tax preparer can use. Intuit sells tax preparation separately as Expert Tax, and many owners keep their existing CPA for the return and use QuickBooks Live only for the monthly books.
For very simple books, Expert Assisted at $59 a month plus doing the categorization yourself is cheaper. For books that need bill pay, receivables or payroll, a freelance bookkeeper at $25 to $60 an hour is usually cheaper than Full Service plus separate help, because one person covers the whole scope and you pay only for hours used.
Because the tier follows your average monthly expenses in QuickBooks, and Intuit re-checks it every three months. A quarter with unusually high spending can move you into a higher band for the next quarter. Ask for the thresholds in writing, and check whether one-off purchases count toward the average.
